Seriously what is it with all these property developers taking tiny one bedroom flats, knocking a wall down and turning the kitchen and living room into one 'open plan' space and pricing it like its a sophisticated loft apartment in New York? Well for profit obviously, but its getting on my nerves. Ok so rather than your living room being 11" by 12" when converted to open plan is now 15" by 12" or something like that, but open plan has some serious bad points which is why I hate it and every stupid television influenced property developer who goes and does it to a half decent flat.
Ok less of me ranting and raving about open plan flats and more to the point of what my issues are with such properties. Firstly I work up Canary Wharf in London and sometimes work some long old hours (boo hoo lol). So sometimes I get back from work pretty late and when I do I throw some washing in the washing machine, put something half decent together to eat and then crash in front of the television. Creature of habit I know but I would imagine many people have a similar routine (unless your lucky and have the other problem of children lol). So if I went home and did this in somewhere that was apparently open plan there would be some issues. I'll spell it out for the less intuitive amongst you.
1) putting the washing on even in a brand new super quiet washing machine would make a seriously annoying noise when your trying to watch TV or relax after a hard day. 2) after cooking something nice to eat like a Thai Red Curry the open plan lounge would pretty much stink for the rest of the evening. Noise and smell in a living room is something no one wants at all, a front room should be a nice relaxing sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of working in the city and open plan property developments just don't allow for this.
Anyway hopefully I can find a nice Victorian house that's been converted into a flat, with a drive, garden and more importantly a separate lounge and kitchen. I won't go into the ridiculous house prices as well be here all day. However if you are a property developer please oh please refrain from converting places into open plan, its not modern and its not contempory as those idiots on television would have you believe.
